Why I have written this course
"It has been a privilege as a Senior Lecturer in Academic English to help tens of thousands of university students get excellent degree and postgraduate results.
My biggest disappointments, though, have been when good students didn't get the results they deserved because they made mistakes when applying the correct writing conventions.
I remember one student who I thought was the best in the class. It was so surprising and disappointing when he graduated with below average results. Despite being an expert in his subject, he failed his most important assignment because he did not follow the rules of essay writing carefully. He had to leave university with a worse grade than he should, and he would take that grade to every course and job application afterwards. He was so upset. I was nearly as upset as he was.
His stories, and others like his, are the reason I want share my expertise with you through this course. It contains so much more information on how to write in formal / academic / professional English than you will find in most study skills courses or web pages on the internet. It teaches you how to write a formal text such as an essay line by line. I want you to have the best information on how to write essays and other types of formal English writing. This will give you a better chance of success in your studies. It will be available for you at any time of day or night, not just when a university tutor is available."
